annoying customer of the day

me, in my nicest bookseller customer service voice: Hi, do you need some help?

customer, pointing at her son, who is lying on the floor reading: Yeah, could you watch him for a minute? I need to run out...

me: Yes, I would love to watch your young son to make sure he is not harmed in any way other than psychologically by the constant abandonment of his mother. In fact, I'm glad you asked, because even though my arms are full of books and other customers are asking me questions, I really am here to be your personal babysitter. I wouldn't want to trouble you because I know you have a nanny on weekdays taking care of him, so I can see why spending a weekend-day with him would be hard. So yes, please leave your child in the store under the supervision of a minimum-wage employee that you've never met and whose name you don't even know.

me, out loud: No, actually I can't do that.

And I walked away with such a confused look on my face.

People are unbelievable! Next time instead of trying to find a sitter, I'm going to drop my kids off at the nearest bookstore.

Wow. If it was me, I'd not only ask if you could watch my kid, but if you'd also like to pay for my child's education (hee hee).
