Star Trek: the best movie ever

On Saturday I saw the new Star trek movie. It was truly awesome. (As always, the following is spoiler-free.)

It had all the components for a great movie:
  • time travel and alternate realites
  • explosions
  • inter-racial (inter-species) love
  • catch phrases
  • aliens
  • Leonard Nimoy
  • and more!
You don't even have to be a fan of the original series - or sci-fi in general - to like the movie. Yes, this movie sets up the backgrounds of the characters (and works in their catch phrases, which I mentioned), but since it is a prequel of sorts it's like they are being introduced to all of us. Some of us are just in on the knowledge of what they become

The casting was excellent - these kids really had the mannerisms and appearances of the folks from the original series. Again, even if you're not familiar enough to make comparisons, the acting was damn fine. People are very excited about Karl Urban, the guy who plays Dr. McCoy (Bones) - he is spot on. The original actor that played Bones (DeForest Kelley) died in 1999, so Karl did a must have watched a lot of the original series to pick up on everything the way he did.
Also: Simon Pegg. Who doesn't love Simon Pegg?

There are lots of wide angle shots of giant spaceships, a few superimposed shots of San Francisco,  and a few alien planets. I didn't have my glasses on, and I was able to see everything fine because there aren't that many dark scenes. I mean, the movie is well-lit, which may not matter to anyone except me.

So. You should go see Star Trek. $10 or so for excitement is not a bad way to spend 2 and a half hours.

I don't make a big deal out of it, but I enjoy some good sci-fi.

I enjoyed it a lot too. Bones was definitely one of the best characters.... Him and Chekov.

Chekov was hilarious, and some of that was probably unintentional.
