dilemma

ok internets, I need your advice.

Say that before I got the job I have now, I was applying for jobs in a field where not only have I worked before, but was licensed by the state to work in. Unfortunately, I did not get any of those jobs, but I got my cool hot rod chick gig instead. Now say that there is an opening for one of those aforementioned jobs, that I have a good chance at filling.

Can you guess my dilemma? Do I give up the super cool job I have now to go work somewhere else? Or do I stay where I am, because that is secure?

I would be making a lot more money at the other job. But it's a lot further away. I wouldn't have fixed hours like I do now, nor would I get surprise 4 day weekends or half days. However, it's for a major company that I know isn't going out of business. Their employees even get financial bonuses. I really like the people I work with now, but some of my best friends were made last time I worked in this other field. It would be nice to not be so bored all day, but I also don't want to be so busy that I get stressed out (which also happened last time I was in this field). It is nice to work in a shop that will fix my car if needed, but I do like discounts at other places too.

I feel bad, but I'm thinking about going for the other job. My current employer has done a lot for me, but I reeeeallly need the money. I would have a title in that job, not just "office chick" or "secretary" or "receptionist" or whatever they feel like calling me that day. I would actually get to use my brain! It would be like I was actually doing something with my life!

So, what do you think? I guess I don't need to feel any sense of loyalty. My bosses would understand. They know that I'm poor AND that the economy stinks, especially around here.

ps - don't let this influence your advice, but I'm sure I would have lots more interest in blogging again, since I wouldn't be sitting in front of a computer all day like I do now. (Also I might have some interesting stories!)

what's wrong with just applying & once you have an interview you can ask plenty of questions to see if it'd be a good (better) fit than where you are now?

no, no, I am going to interview. I just want to be prepared when they offer me the job!

I say new job. I know your job now is cool, but go for more money.

True... I did do that for 6 years...

There is a lot to be said for working at something that is intellectually stimulating. What is your gut telling you?

My gut is rumbling because it has no food because I have no money.

You know, I have a lot of really boring days. I think I will go for it!

I'd go for money and stability - especially with the way the economy is right now.

Money is such a factor. Damn economy!

Couldn't you just work at the place you are currently until they accept or reject your application?

I'd think of it this way, which job would I want to work at for the rest of my life (assuming that I make a career of one or the other)? If I truly enjoy what I'm doing, then the money really doesn't matter, because I'm doing something I enjoy, and so long as I have enough to pay rent/mortgage and eat, then I'm satisfied.

I know. I'm not quitting until I'm hired at the other place, but I want to think about this before I get hired, so I can give them an answer.

I'd be happy at both jobs - therein lies the dilemma. I wouldn't consider it if I would hate it there.
