des causing a stir

So today was my last day at the bookstore. I quit not because of the throngs of screaming children, the unrecognized and pointless work, the low pay, or even because I was offered another job with better everything. No, I quit because apparently you can not wear jeans to work at the bookstore, even though (in the children's section, anyway) you spend a good portion of the day on the ground crawling around on your knees.

They probably mentioned something about it when I was hired, but who listens to all that drivel? I own one pair of jeans, and they are too big now (apparently I was fatter in CA than in NYC) and I only wear jeans to work once in a great while anyway.

But today I wore jeans. Here is my reasoning.
1) It's my last day - what are they gonna do, send me home before midnight? Gasp, no!
2) I was already wearing jeans for most of the day and wasn't gonna change at 4:45 so I could blah blah blah.

The most oft-asked question during the day (from coworkers. Otherwise it would be "can you help me find a book?") was "they didn't say anything about you wearing jeans?" with more than a hint of astonishment. My response was always "today is my last day, so I felt like wearing jeans and did." This was also met with astonishment and a "you got out of here!" kind of statement. I was like, yeah, I have this magical power that lets me get better jobs....

So anyway, if the bookstore people had lives, I wouldn't have been the talk of the town today.

Good gosh, I would NEVER buy books from someone wearing jeans! What IS the world coming to?

It's true. I'm sure not a single children's book was sold all night.

yay for last days!
i always said 'what are they gonna do? fire me?' on the last day/week if i did something that wasn't protocol.

I also say that. It's so much fun.
Sometimes I say it when it's not my last week, and I've never been fired yet, so I must be doing something right ;)

OK, I love that you can have pink hair and work there but god forbid you wear jeans. That might give customers the wrong idea.

Mar, I say that too. When I wanted to quit my awful nonprofit job, I kept doing things that I should not and saying, "So fire me," hoping that they would. (Every time I tried to quit, they refused to accept my resignation. The whole thing was fucked up.)

Well jeans can be misinterpreted in so many ways, not like pink hair.
