I'm a sucker for a discount

So yeah I get 30% off everything at the bookstore. This is cool, but only really useful for big ticket items. Otherwise, the handy dandy inter-net often allows me to find things cheaper. But if something is right in front of me, and I'm like, wow, 30% off, and I don't feel like expending time searching i-net-ally*, I'll buy it.

This happened to me yesterday. As I was organizing the juvenile history section, I came across a book that only a few people in the world would think is hilarious. One of them is me, another is one of my constitution-reading cohorts that has a bday coming.

So while I'm line to spend my $10 or whatever, I notice a DVD box set. It catches my eye because I'm in love with Audrey Hepburn and these are 5 of her movies, all together. Normally I ignore Audrey box sets because they only have 3 movies in them, and one of them (Roman Holiday) I already own. But this one had 5! Yes, one of them was the one I have already, but 4 of them weren't. Sticker price? About $40. That's already a pretty damn good deal. I did some quick math (luckily the one person in line ahead of me was slow as a butt) and figured that my discount was a good thing.

So I came home with many new things. :)

* I would have written this without the dashes (inetally) but I didn't want people to think I misspelled something. No, it's spelled right. It's just a made up word so you wouldn't know that at first.

And sorry I don't have anything more interesting to write about today. I will soon, I promise.

And when was the last time you checked out jewelry by des?

Been enjoying reading about your exploits in the bookstore world/city. I used to work in a lovely independent bookstore, and they started me out with a 20% discount, and after a year or two, they upped it to 40%. Not bad. They were still making a profit on most of my purchases (and buying books has always been one of my weaknesses). Maybe you can talk the owners into a higher discount once you've been there a while?

Anyway, I am tagging you to write 7 random things about yourself; the rules are over at my blog. This is my first time doing this, so I hope you don't mind. I'll repeat what the person who tagged me said: it's not compulsory, but I thought you might like to join in...?

Congrats on the new job!

Hey, are you de-lurking?

Unfortunately, this isn't one of those independent stores. This is a very very large chain. So I don't get a say in my discount :(

But I'll do the 7 things at some point.

Who doesn't love a good deal!?!

I've often thought of working part-time at one of those upscale children's stores so I could (maybe) afford to buy something there.

An important part of working somewhere is getting a discount.

Yay for new things!

And you'll never believe this...but I've never seen an Audrey Hepburn movie. Not one.

I SWEAR it's on my list of things to do!

Yes, I guess I am (was) de-lurking.

And it does appear that the larger the corporation, the less wiggle room there is for employee or employer to make those changes. Of course, in the large chain-y places, it's rare to ever get to know the employer anyway. It's probably better (fairer) this way, too. They can't play favorites and give one person great benefits and other person crappy ones.

Well, you could always unionize the place! (Yeah, right....)
