playing tourist - a call to arms

Next month, the boy and I are going to our nation's capital for a 4-day weekend getaway. That's right, Washington DC. We're going to do something we've never done before: play as tourists.

That means we'll be at the National Mall and looking at all the monuments and going to the Smithsonian and the Spy Museum (yay!) and taking lots of pictures of everything. I want to go to the zoo as well, but our hotel is not right next to it, like it is with everything else.

So.
Any ideas? What should we avoid? What can't we miss? Where should we eat? What's the best way to get there from NYC?*

I know I have some readers that live in DC (or the metro area). I know I have even more readers that have been to DC. You. Help me. I'll give you NYC tips in exchange, and maybe even CA tips. I'm good like that.

* Amtrak is pretty damn expensive, and the Chinatown bus has that whole "flipping over" issue that we're not ready to deal with, and we have no car.

with rental costs, gas, and the stress of driving in 2 big cities, I don't know if I'm ready for that. ;)

Actually I just looked up rental cars to find out a price, and the places accessible to us are closed on Sunday, the day we would come back. So that's a no go anyway. Stupid.

Well, one thing you HAVE to do is visit ME!

E-mail me for particulars...

If you're touring the National Mall area, I highly suggest the whole Tourmobile thing. You can get tickets for them at Union Station.

Well I don't know if I'll be visiting any people... I should kinda hang out with Craig for our 10th anniversary...

if you can handle it, go to the Holocaust Museum. Simply amazing and powerful.

There is also a fairly new (last 5 years) FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt memorial. She was one cool chick.

Ooh! I didn't know about the Eleanor Roosevelt memorial.

And the Holocaust Museum... that'll take some gearing up for.

my bf brought me back a t-shirt from the spy museum when his fam was there for christmas.
and he keeps gushing about this italian restaurant named philomena's (sic?) where they make their own pasta.

Italian food, eh? That will require some looking into.

First of all, the Spy Museum is awesome and so much fun!

If you are into ethnic food and such, Adams Morgan seems to have a nice range of restaurants: Indian, African, Caribbean, Mexican, you name it. And it's near the zoo.

I'm sort of anti-tourist when I'm in DC and hole up in Columbia Heights with Code, so I can't really offer a lot of suggestions for what to do in the Mall area. Hope you have fun!

The Holocaust Museum is totally depressing for an anniversary trip. If you do want to go, you need to order tickets in advance. They are free.

The American History Museum is awesome. I so love that place. I suspect that you will too. I am a nerd and like the Museum at the Old Post Office also.

And I ditto Jessabean on Adams Morgan. Lots and lots of good food. There's an Indian place I like called Jyoti. There are a few cute coffee bars there too.

I assume Craig will bring his laptop, so I can look back at my blog for reference when I need ideas.

All the suggestions given are good ones.

In addition, I'd suggest some of the eateries in Union Station. Some are chains, some aren't, but they're all fun.

The Smithsonian American History museum is closed for remodeling...there are two Air And Space Museums, and one of them is at Dulles airport so all you have to pay for is parking (I think).

There's a women in the arts museum here, and the zoo is FREE to get into. You only pay for parking or way expensive food.

I hope you have a good time, whatever you do!

Thanks Sudiegirl!
We won't have a car, so paying for parking does not affect us.
