I think I've been Saved

Last night we went off Broadway to see ”Altar Boyz.” It’s about a Catholic boy-band, set up with all the boy-band stereotypes: the leader, the white gangster, the gay guy, the Mexican, and the um… Jew. The play is set up like you are at the group’s last concert, so instead of things like “plots” and “sets” it was just these 5 guys singing about Jesus and talking to the audience. It was very “school-assembly-where-they-preach-Jesus-by-ripping-phone-books-in-half” meets “ridiculous-boy-band-choreography” but it was hilarious. You might even call it “uproariously funny**.” In fact, I’m pretty sure someone has called it that.

There were songs called “Jesus Called My Cell Phone” and “Girl, You Make Me Want To Wait*.” This last is especially funny because like all good Christians, the Boyz are waiting until marriage to do the deed. They pulled a chick out of the audience and sang this to her, embarrassing her and making her laugh at the same time.

I’m sure this will never be made into a movie because it breaks the 4th wall, but you should go see it. Uproariously funny.

* These aren’t the actual titles, but they are actual lines from the songs.
** This isn't a review of the same cast I saw, or in the same location.

When it has deteriorated to the point that it makes it to the Canadian prairies I shall go..

How did you wind up deciding to go see that? I am glad that you enjoyed it, but it seems a random choice. I know you are not normally swayed by advertising claiming that things are "uproariously funny."

h & b - I'm sure it'll get there... just like all those other off-Broadway musicals...

suz - of course I love things that are uproariously funny. Also, I didn't buy the tickets (from the limited availability discount ticket place).
