I've often noted how the people in my office don't know how to control the temperature. When it's hot outside, it's hot inside. When it's cold outside, it's cold inside. Sometimes they blame it on the building and how for the most part, the whole building is kept the same temperature. This is a stupid system and I hate it.
Today I am absolutely freezing. I can barely type because I have no fingers. I get up and walk around frequently, but it's hard because I have no toes. While walking, I encounter the rest of the people that work here - you know, the ones that don't sit right next to the window. Let me sidetrack and explain the window. It's not really a window; it's more of a wall that opens. We never open the wall because then all the stuff that is against the wall would plummet 5 stories onto the sidewalk & street below. Then I'd be the one that has to go get all the stuff and reorganize it. Because it is a wall that opens, there are edges that are not completely sealed. These un-seals let in the cold air. They encourage the cold air to come in, they welcome it like an old friend. This is why I'm easily the coldest person in the office.
So I encounter the others. The ones that don't sit next to the window. They admit that it's cold in here, but "not as cold as yesterday." They say things like "yesterday I had to wear my sweater all day." I politely remind them that I am wearing a sweater and a jacket, and am wishing for my warm fuzzy boots and some mittens. I drank some tea. It helped only momentarily. A coworker (who is in my department and thus sits near me) is also cold and shared her hot chocolate with me. I usually don't go the instant-cocoa route, but I'm willing to do it this once for the sake of staying alive. While I was returning to my desk with the very full cup of very hot chocolate, someone actually said "I hope you spill that." My response: "What a jerk. If I do spill it, I'll make sure to spill it on you." She had some great insight about how she didn't want that, because it's hot, and I continued to my ice cave, never spilling a single drop, but cursing this person all the while.
I am very ready to go home. I have less work than usual, and also less digits to work with. I shouldn't have to be this bundled up inside my place of work. The jacket & hat are supposed to be for getting between work and home, 2 supposedly warm places. Yet here I am wearing all my outside gear as I sit at my desk trying not to get frostbite too badly.
I wish I was exaggerating.
**UPDATE**
Since I wrote this, I have had several people come over and say some variation of "It's cold over here! Aren't you cold?" To which I reply, "No, I wear the coat purely for fashion." One person even said "Wait, this window is a door! Did you know that?" Why yes I did know that actually. That's why it's so freaking cold right here. "Oh well I'm not cold." Because it's a comptetion, and she would have noticed the door if it wasn't pullin frozen air into the building.
I am still cranky because I am still cold.

God, Des, I'm sorry. Can you get a big dangerous looking space heater to warm you up a little.
I HATE working when I am cold. I can't think!
yeah, a stinking kerosene heater with a burning fire would encourage someone to get you out of there fast! Or for real, they make nice little electric units nobody would even notice you could hide so maybe you could at least have toes again.
I think I am going to invest in a heater.
As for the broad who hoped your hot chocolate spilled, I hope she gets kicked in the pussy.
Get a space heater -- they make a big difference. Do they have Costcos in NY? When I visited Manhattan I have to admit I wasn't really sure where people shopped for Targer-like items.
There's a Kmart nearby... I think I can get something there cheap. It only needs to last through this winter, then I won't need it. I have a fan (also from kmart) that I use when it's more than 30 degrees.
