Okay, I’m not drunk. I’m at work. And the problem is that I have the worst headache I’ve had in a long time. I woke up with it. It didn’t come seconds after opening my eyes. I was sleeping, and then I wasn’t sleeping anymore because my head was being crushed. Then I couldn’t do anything, even think. It took me 10 minutes to get my shoes on because they are brand new and have not loosened to fit my foot and my rapidly compressing skull was not equipped to handle this type of emergency.
I blame the Simpsons. Specifically, the writers and animators, and Matt Groening. Yesterday I watched 2 of the 4 discs of the 7th season with commentary. I was able to prove my massive nerdiness, however. (Like there needed to be more proof?)
For example:
I remembered that there was a contest to see who could guess who shot Mr. Burns, and the person that got it right would be animated in a future episode. There was never any new guest star. But nobody had any inkling that this had ever happened. I even consulted the resident Simpsons’ experts, but there was no memory of this. They thought that I had envisioned it in a dream or something. But I remembered it so clearly!
And then –
Not only did the commentary mention the contest, it explained why nobody had ever been animated, because there was never a winner. (I don’t feel like explaining it in detail, but if you’re interested, there are ways you can find out more.) I raised my arms in triumph and shouted “I told you!” at the resident Simpsons expert. He had to concede that I knew something that he didn’t.
Another example:
In the 138th Episode Spectacular, one of the trivia questions asks which 2 characters have died. The answer is Dr. Marvin Monroe and Bleeding Gums Murphy. Bleeding Gums’ death was a big deal. There was a whole episode about it. Marvin Monroe, however, had never been mentioned. I’ve always been complaining that he didn’t really die, that all of a sudden, mentioned offhandedly, there is a Marvin Monroe Memorial Hospital. I’ve pointed this out again and again.
And then –
There it is in the commentary, almost word for word what I had been arguing. Marvin Monroe died off camera, without mention, and they mentioned the newly renamed hospital once. Again, I raised my arms in triumph.
(I realize that I could have found both of these confirming facts on the magical internet, but nothing’s better than rock-solid proof straight from the creator’s mouths.)
So, after my many triumphs of the night, it is no surprise that I woke up with the worst headache ever experienced. Could this be the karma I was talking about yesterday? No. This was my body refusing to believe that it was only Tuesday.
To exemplify matters, here was this morning’s Calvin & Hobbes:
That’s exactly true in so many ways. Bill Watterson is a genius. And now my headache is somewhat bearable, thanks to the mix of distraction (the blog) and drugs (caffeine, chocolate, & ibuprofen). Ah, the 2 D’s of headache semi-cures.
