spinster des (post #2 today)

Today is one of those days that, besides not having the live-in boyfriend around, I don't want to get married. New Girl was telling me about her sister's wedding in the Bahamas. It was cheap. Everything was planned for her. Honeymoon was built right in. The guests had a great time they would never forget. Sounds awesome.

Out of boredom I looked stuff like this up. Most wedding plans ran about $3000 (not including airfare) and were pretty all-inclusive. Sure, guests would have to buy plane tickets & stay in a hotel, but the hotel would give them a discount.

Just for comparison, I looked up a wedding at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, which seems like the kind of place I would someday tie the knot. It's pretty, it has flowers, it's local, it's easy to get to. BUT it's not cheap. Your wedding would have to be held before 9am so the park could open to the public. Then (and I guess this is "optional") you would have the reception at the hall in the park, which charges thousands of dollars just to reserve, not counting the $120 minimum for your minimum 100 guests. Very very quickly I got to $20,000. Not counting music, photographer, flowers, dress, etc. I don't have that kind of money! Even if I did I would want to use it on something else, like a down payment on a house or something. It is possible to have a great wedding without going into severe debt.

The Bahamas are looking better and better. Now all I need is a groom....

Let's not ever discuss the crazy wedding that Husband planned for us. *choke*cough*$6,000 for florist*cough*choke* That's money we'll never be seeing again. Sigh.

I believe mine cost about $60. We went to the courthouse, and we're just as married. In fact, it was low stress and happy as hell.

We did throw a backyard party later on, but even with catering and rented tables, it wasn't that much.

my least favorite part is hearing how much things cost.
Count, you did it the right way.

20k sounds pretty cheap for New York. If it had been up to me, I wouldn't have had a big wedding. I would have eloped and saved my money. But my husband said he wanted to leave the single world with a big bang! (or party I guess)

i've been saying i'm going to elope for years. and so have my parents. they told me they'd even buy me a ladder.
with friends planning weddings where i don't even know the costs, i don't want to think about it. niagara falls here i come! in 2012!

a friend of mine has the best idea... run off to Hawaii. Whomever wants to come, come. Otherwise, party back at home.

And Cherann, that was just the minimum for food. But weddings are expensive everywhere.
