bargain shopping

Yesterday was supposed to be a day of shopping. I've had my eye on some black ankle boots that I could really use, and I still had several gift cards to Barnes & Noble that I needed to use immediately.

So we set off for Mooshoes. There are my cute boots, but oh, they don't have my size because they've been discontinued. Poop. I could get these other ones that aren't discontinued, but they are ugly. I don't want them. *shudder*

A little disheartened, we hasten on our way to the Union Square B&N because it has 4 or 5 stories, and I need all of them. I had 2 books in particular that I needed to get: the newest Get Fuzzy collection, and the latest Thomas Pynchon novel. Then I still had more money to spend. I didn't end up getting the latest Pynchon, instead getting an older one (that was half the price and only 2/3 as long), but in total The Boyfriend and I purchased 7 books for like $29. I love gift cards. Besides the fact I've already read the Get Fuzzy book on the train home, I still have 4 actual novels to read before I need to go shopping again. I'm not counting The Boyfriend's 2, because we all know I'm not going to read either The Koran or a book on ethics. They look good on my shelf though.

When I got home, instead of studying, I shopped online for my non-boots. The problem with not wearing leather is that it's really hard to find a nice pair of boots. The only acceptable ones I found are from a company based in England. They cost about $107, then about $50 and 2 months to ship. This makes me sad. So I'm waiting on the boots.

But because I did not buy boots, I got to buy my new phone. And even though for some reason I couldn't order it online (stupid error message) the very nice person on the phone (who was different than the person last time but just as cool) got me the discount anyway, so I paid $30 for a phone that should be $180. Yeah, I'm living the high life.

All in all, a good weekend for not spending money.

And just a side note - I feel like a child, maybe a retarded one, when I come to work. I’ve got my tiger hat, mittens, and backpack as I walk carefully over the icy sidewalk trying not to fall on my butt.

Love the boots-I don't blame you for waiting though...the horrible price!
I love gift cards-especially for bookstores!!
Does that phone have a good reception? I'm looking for a new phone....

I'm always curious as to see who clicks on the links...

As for the phone, I did a lot of research and this one got really goor reviews. LG is a good company - that's what I have now. I'll let you know how it is after I start using it!

Enjoy Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. I'm 52 years old and it remains the finest work of fiction I have ever read. Probably 75.666% of people who start reading GR end up putting it aside, unread. It IS a challenging read. Trying to make conventional sense out of it a complete waste of time, and actually detracts from the experience. Think of it as a Jackson Pollack painting in which thousands of dabs of paint (or beautifully literate sentances, in this case) coalesce into a single work of art.
Smoking a lot of hash or opium would probably help, but I'm told doing so is illegal in your country.

Thanks, kind stranger!

Hopefully I am not one to put the book away unfinished. I am going in expecting the nonsense that is Pynchon, and all I do is read.

And yes, opium & marijuana are illegal here. But I'm not much of a smoker anyway.
