helping animals with free stuff

Last night I went to the grand opening party for Animal Haven SoHo. No animals have been moved to the new shelter yet, so when they asked me to volunteer for the night, I politely declined. I’m not here to pas out flyers or greet people at the door. So I went as a guest, with my date in tow.

Lots of local restaurants donated food, and there were previews of things the “doggie boutique” will be selling. Apparently there is a product line called Sexy Beast. This is a line of fancy-pants cosmetics for your dog. Sheen spray, skin toner, and fragrance. For your dog. I know this is NYC and people are crazy with their dogs-as-accessories, but this was too much. Why should I pay over $50 for less than 2 oz. of spray to make my dog’s coat smell “good?” Why can’t I just wash him with doggie shampoo from Petco for $3.99? There were no samples of this, with good reason. People who make cosmetics for my dog that are more expensive than the cosmetics I buy for myself can’t afford to waste money.

There were samples of Corazon Blanco Tequila for some reason, served with some sort of juice in a sugar-rimmed glass, watered down to the point of not-tastingness. I’ll repeat that: the animal shelter was giving away free samples of tequila. I questioned it, didn’t get any answers, so accepted my gift bag and went home.

In the bag were some “gifts” from Sexy Beast showcasing their product line. Again, no samples, just pictures. There was also a fancy bottle of tequila. Small – about enough for one good mixed drink. But it was free. I still don’t understand it, but I’ll keep the tequila.

And you people wonder why I volunteer for an animal shelter.

Seriously, I also nearly fell out of my chair laughing at the gem.

As for the tequila, maybe it was watered down so people could share it with their dogs.
