Tuesday adventure

Last night I was all lined up to see my new favorite movie, Wristcutters: A Love Story. My friend, who is brother to the filmmakers, found out how to get into a test screening. They asked us all sorts of silly questions such as age, race, occupation (FYI -I’m a student. It’s just easier that way), and have we seen any of the following movies: Sideways, Garden State, Lost in Translation, Eternal Sunshine, and one other that I forget. I’ve seen all but Sideways.

So we head to Union Square to get some chow before the movie. There are no a lot of places around there I like to eat. There is Zen Palate, which is a vegetarian place, but can be more expensive than I want to spend sometimes, and there is some crappy “coffee shop.” We ate at this place last week, and it was really trying to be a nightclub. All the waitstaff have impeccable “messy” hair and clothes that they paid hundreds of dollars for. The place is tragically hip. Neither Craig nor I were cool enough to eat there, so we ended up very very sick afterwards. This was last week, and we don’t ever have to eat there again. Since it was around 100 degrees yesterday, we didn’t feel the need to wander too much. So we went to Zen Palate.

Then he headed to the theatre to stand in line. Outside. In the hot hot heat. Nothing happened except that we did see 2 skeletons pass by. I would say that they were girls, but generally girls have some sort of muscular structure so they are able to stand and move. These skeletons didn’t have that; they had only their bones covered in taut skin. It was a little disturbing.

Finally, the theatre people decided that there were enough 25-ish white students in there so they cut the line off, 3 people ahead of us. Everyone behind that line was out of luck. Thanks for making us stand out here so long. We were all primed for a movie, so we headed to the nearest Mr. Softee (luckily there’s one on every corner), got our ice cream, and bought tickets for Pirates of the Carribean.

Several F words can describe this movie: Fun, Fanciful, and Formulaic. It is enjoyable, if long. There are some good Fencing scenes between multiple Fighting combatants, and at least 2 scenes that involve large rolling objects with people inside and/or on top of them. There isn’t enough Johnny (is there ever?) but that was ok because he didn’t seem to be having as much Fun as he did in the First one. All in all, a good way to escape the heat.

When we left the theatre, 3 hours later, it was raining. Actually it was storming. The heat wave had broken and was replaced by thunder and lightning. Much better. We were, however, fully unprepared for the downpour. We decided the 3 of us could split a cab affordably, so we trucked off across the street to the bank. The boys made it ok, but I was stuck at the stoplight coming very close to getting killed by taxis that weren’t going to pick us up. By the time I met up with them, I was plenty soaked, especially my flip-flop clad feet. We walked the block to the subway station, trying in vain to get a cab. Unfortunately, everyone else had the same idea as us, so all cabs were full.

Since we were at the train station anyway, we took the train home. This gave us some time to dry off before we got soaked again. But then we were home, and all was made well and dry and warm again. Actually, it wasn’t so bad being soaking wet from head to toe; the only pitfall was on the train that still had the AC on. But it was still much much better than being hot.

The end.

I'm afraid to see Pirates. I think I'm getting tired of Johnny Depp. But I'm still in denial. I don't want my suspicions confirmed.

I was tired of Orlando Bloom even before the Council of Elrond.

All in all, your tuesdays kick my tuesdays' asses all over the place.

I'm going to go tip a cow over or something.

(Was the other movie "Elizabethtown"? Just a guess. Haven't seen it, and I don't know much about it, but it looks like one of those quietly tragic love stories.)

what are you talking about, woman? I seem to have interrupted your ramblings...

Elizabethtown is not mentioned, but I have bo desire to see that. Not a big Kirsten Dunst or non-elf Orlando Bloom fan.

My mom tried to send sis and me to Pirates last night. I refused - I had heard that it sucked. I do love me some Johnny Depp though.

Was it the cow-tipping reference that threw you off? It's an Okie thing, I think.

Or...was it Elizabethtown that didn't make sense? I was wondering if it was on the list of films on the questionnaire you took at the test-screening. You said there was another movie you couldn't remember, and I thought, from what I'd seen, Elizabethtown would go along well with the other movies you mentioned.

I know, I know, I should try to make sense once in a while.

Ramblin' on,

OK, NOW i understand. I got the cow-tipping. I didn't know why you mentioned Elizabethtown. No it was some other independent film that made it big. It bugs the crap out of me that I can't remember. Grrr.

Sue- like I said, it was fun in a family sort of way, but not my favorite Johnny role. Not much to drool over either.
